Sport Pilot Training
A Streamlined Path to the Sky

Overview

The Sport Pilot Certificate is designed for students who want a more accessible, lower-hour path to flying. Training focuses on Light-Sport Aircraft (LSA) and requires fewer hours than a full Private Pilot License.

This is a great option for hobbyists, recreational flyers, and anyone who wants to enjoy flying with fewer regulatory requirements.

FAA Requirements for Sport Pilot Certificate

Per 14 CFR §61.313 & 61.311, a Sport Pilot applicant must complete:

Minimum Total Flight Hours

20 hours total flight time, including:

  • 15 hours dual instruction

  • 5 hours solo flight

Additional required elements include:

  • 2 hours cross-country training

  • 10 takeoffs and landings to a full stop

  • One solo cross-country flight of at least 75 NM

Medical Requirements

Sport Pilots do not need an FAA medical certificate — a valid U.S. driver’s license may be used to validate medical fitness.

Recent FAA Changes

Under the FAA’s forthcoming MOSAIC reforms, privileges and aircraft categories under the Sport Pilot rules are expanding, making the pathway even more accessible.
